Interview Questions - #2 Meet the Owner

Would you ask someone to marry you after the first date? Before making a hiring decision, we recommend at least 2 interviews. After all, what if they think we're crazy? ;)

Pro Tips:

  • Never interview alone. This is too important.

  • At this point, you've screened and given technical assessments. This is not the time to ask about qualifications or a detailed accounting question (unless you think your team had a big miss). This is getting a feel for culture fit and vision alignment. The big picture stuff.

  • In addition to the questions above, use your intuition. If you have a concern about something on their assessment, make sure to ask a thoughtful question that addresses your concern.

  • Give them space at the beginning by asking them if they have any initial questions from last time before you dive in.

  • Frame this as conversational. Let them know you want to be an open book and give them plenty of time to ask more questions about you and the firm. This will help prevent them from being caught off guard later in the conversation. They should be curious and have good questions for you but if they don't even after you let them know it's coming, pay attention to what that means about their interest in your firm.

  • Invite one of your trusted team members who were in the first screening interview. This will give continuity with the candidate, help them feel at ease, and give you a cohesive perspective.

  • Let them see the real you, at an appropriate, professional level of course!

  • Do give them time for questions! At least 10-15 minutes.

May you interview well and find your next great team member!
